Project Management is the application of methodologies, processes, knowledge, skills, and experience to achieve the objectives of a project.
A project is a temporary endeavor designed to produce a unique product, service, or result. It has a defined beginning and end, as well as a defined scope and resources.
Project Management Institute (PMI) is the world’s leading not-for-profit professional membership association for the project, program, and portfolio management profession.

A methodology is a systematic approach or model that project managers use for the design, planning, implementation, monitoring, and completion of project objectives. Some of the main methodologies are:
- Agile – an iterative approach (also Scrum, Kanban)
- Waterfall – a sequential approach
- Adaptive Project Framework (APF) – adjusts the scope to meet the budget and schedule
Once a methodology is selected, processes are developed. Project management includes several key phases of a project:
- Initiation, Concept Phase
- Planning, Design Phase
- Implementation, Execution Phase
- Monitoring and Controlling – throughout all phases
- Closing, Completion Phase
In addition, there are other frameworks that complement project management:
- American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC) Process Classification Framework (PCF)
- Buck Institute for Education (BIE) Project Based Learning (PBL)
